John Harrison was born to a Philadelphia Quaker family and studied in England for 2 years, including studies in chemistry with Joseph Priestley. He returned to Philadelphia in 1793 and established himself as a druggist and chemist. In 1808 he achieved the first commercially successful manufacture of sulfuric acid and then concentrated on industrial chemistry.
